About me

I am currently training to participate in The Relay, to be held on May 5th and 6th, 2012. The Relay is an approx 200 mile, non-stop run by a 12 member team starting in Calistoga (Napa Valley) and terminating near Santa Cruz. This is the third time I am running this. I have picked started runnning in the last couple of years, It does not come naturally to me nor is it easy. However, I am doing this because it is a challenging, fun and collaborative team event and it helps a cause that is very important to each of us --- "Literacy".

Lack of education keeps many millions in the dark. It keeps them downtrodden, poor, exploited and underutilized. Literacy is a key out of poverty and darkness for many. It breaks the cycle of poverty and opens up a world of opportunities. Once a family is touched by literacy the future generations tend to get proper education and are open to the many possibilities which were unheard of to their parents and grandparents. It is the greatest gift one could give or receive. Not only does a literate population help themselves pull up, but they also raise a better next generation.

Although India is an emerging country, in terms of education there are millions of children who grow up to be adults without an decent opportunity to see the inside of a classroom. To put it in perspective, literacy rate in India is a little over 70%. It has improved a few pecentage points in the last decade due to the persistent efforts of several NGOs. The India Literacy Project (ILP) seeks to alleviate the illliteracy problem and sponsors various projects throughout India working with several NGOs.

What ILP does

India Literacy Project (ILP) supports projects in areas such as educating kids forced into child labor, providing vocational training to unskilled youth and building functional skills for illiterate adults. Over the last 20 plus years, ILP has disbursed over $2,000,000 USD, promoting literacy projects in India and reaching out to over 100000+ women and children. I am a volunteer for the ILP.

How you can help

Imagine changing the life of one soul by exposing them to the power of literacy. Your contribution can do that. So please take a moment to help out the many underprivileged people and lend them a hand in breaking out of the vicious cycle of illiteracy. No amount is too small, and every kind gesture from you is appreciated by me and the thousands of children whose lives it will touch deeply. You generosity can help. Yes you can !!!

All the donations will go towards the funding literacy projects in India. Since ILP is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, all donations are 100% tax deductible.

I have pledged to run at least 17 miles and raise $100 per mile I run.

I would appreciate if you could include "Team ILP - Sath Nelakonda" in the memo section of your check. I can collect these checks personally from folks who are local to this area (San Jose & vicinity). If you have any questions please contact me at sath[DOT]nelakonda[AT]gmail[DOT]com.

In closing, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this blurb and everything you did to help this truly worthy cause. Training for and covering the approx 17 miles will be a challenge for me, but it is nothing compared to the burden and the problems experienced by those lacking literacy.
