Description:

Project Nanhi Kali empowers more than 100,000 girls across rural, tribal and urban regions in nine states of India by providing them with high-quality education support and resources. The programme is currently implemented in Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan.

The programme includes academic support in the form of before or after-class centres that aim to bridge the learning gap in government school classrooms. Material support is provided in the form of schoolbags, shoes, books, uniforms, lunchboxes and other essentials that help a girl go to school with dignity. Project Nanhi Kali also mobilizes communities of parents, teachers and village elders to make them active stakeholders in the process of change.

The programme has seen a 10-20 percentage point increase in learning outcomes, and an average attendance of 83%, that is much higher than the national average. More than 8,000 girls have completed Class X through the Nanhi Kali programme. Over 80% of them are currently pursuing higher studies or vocational training, thereby bearing testament to the sustained impact the programme has on the girls.

Donors are provided with the profiles and photos of the girls they support, as well as periodic progress reports. This way, the donor becomes an integral part of the change they are helping to create. Sponsorship of a primary school girl (Grades 1 to 5) is USD 50 and sponsorship of a secondary school girl (Grades 6 to 10) is USD 72.

Mahindra Foundation USA was established to provide a platform for Americans and Indians residing in USA to support the education of underprivileged girls in India through Project Nanhi Kali. The project was started by Mr. Anand Mahindra in 1996. Since 2005, the programme is jointly managed by K. C. Mahindra Education Trust and Naandi Foundation. For more information, please visit www.nanhikali.org.
